Glentoran's four-match unbeaten run ended with a 1-0 defeat to Cliftonville in the Toals County Antrim Shield quarter-final at Solitude on Tuesday. Ben Quinn's goal nine minutes after the restart was enough to send the Reds through and halt the Glens' recent momentum.
Paddy McCourt, the interim manager, was left frustrated by the manner of the goal and his side's missed chances. "It was really frustrating. I thought we played well first half," McCourt said. "We gave away a really poor goal, which is really disappointing, from our corner."
Key moments and chances
Glentoran created several clear opportunities to equalise but found the woodwork unkind. Ross Clarke struck the post with just over ten minutes remaining, and Ben Gallagher saw a late effort from a Ryan Cooney cross hit the outside of the post in the 89th minute. Earlier, Jordan Jenkins had a goal disallowed when referee Steven Gregg ruled he had illegally backed into goalkeeper PJ Morrison.
The visitors also had to deal with an early injury blow, as defender Kyle McClelland was forced off after half an hour following a block on a Jenkins effort. Despite the setbacks, Glentoran pressed, with Marcus Kane firing over from distance and Rory Hale miscuing a promising chance early in the second period. At the other end, Billy Crellin was largely untroubled aside from Quinn's decisive strike, which came from a Brian Healy through ball.
Returning players and outlook
There were positives in the return of several players from injury. Defender Zeno Ibsen Rossi started, while striker Pat Hoban and midfielder Aaron McEneff featured from the bench, with Hoban playing the final 20 minutes. Their returns offer a boost as the team refocuses on the Premiership, where they currently sit fourth with 17 points from 11 games.
McCourt immediately shifted focus to Saturday's league fixture, emphasising the need to get back to winning ways. The Glens host Limavady United at The BetMcLean Oval, a side they beat 2-0 in August and who currently occupy 10th place in the table.
For Cliftonville, the victory ended a five-game losing streak and sets up a home semi-final against Bangor next month. Their manager Jim Magilton praised his team's courage and character in securing the result. Glentoran must now channel their frustration into securing three points this weekend to maintain their position in the upper reaches of the standings.

The club confirmed on Friday that Jim Magilton turned down the permanent manager's role a month ago. Defender Jarlath O'Rourke, who recently returned from injury, stressed the team's ambition. "We are determined to go as far as possible in every competition," O'Rourke said. The Glens, fourth in the Premiership, now focus on the league after Tuesday's Shield exit.
