Glentoran have held talks with Duncan Ferguson about becoming their new permanent manager, with former player Shane McCabe warning the move would be a 'big risk'. The Everton legend is a candidate to succeed Declan Devine, who departed in mid-September, leaving Paddy McCourt and Tim McCann in interim charge.

McCabe, who won the Gibson Cup with the Glens, gave his verdict on the potential appointment. He described Ferguson as a 'top character' and an 'unbelievable footballer back in his day', whose profile could boost the Irish League. But he expressed serious doubts about the fit for the Oval hotseat.

"I would always try and have someone that's local, has good expertise and has a good management style," McCabe said. He believes the impact of great personalities can't be underestimated, suggesting a Boxing Day derby between Ferguson and Linfield's David Healy would be brilliant for the league. However, McCabe is unsure if Ferguson is the best managerial fit, pointing to the Scotsman's brief and difficult spells in charge of Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Interim team's strong run

The uncertainty comes as the interim duo of McCourt and McCann have overseen a strong run of form. Glentoran are unbeaten in their last five Premiership matches, a sequence of four wins and a draw that has lifted them to fourth in the standings with 20 points from 12 games. Their most recent result was a 1-0 win over Limavady United on 17 October, secured by a late D. Larmour goal.

This upturn has provided stability while the board resolves the managerial situation. McCabe stressed that clarity is needed soon so the club can move forward properly. No final decision on Devine's successor has been made, with Cliftonville's Jim Magilton having previously turned down an approach.

Key fixture ahead

The immediate focus shifts to a massive test this Friday, an away trip to league leaders Coleraine. Glentoran will look to maintain their unbeaten run and close a 14-point gap to the summit. The last meeting between the sides in September ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Glens, adding extra edge to the rematch. The outcome of this game could significantly influence the mood around the club as its long-term managerial direction is settled. The next fixture is scheduled for 25 October at 19:45.
